How Busy (Or Not Busy) Is Your Local Gym? Enter Your Zip and Find Out

Side by side: an empty row of treadmills beside two women walking on treadmills in a busy gym

Everyone has a theory about their gym. It is always packed. It dies after eight. The six a.m. crowd is a cult. We can replace the theories with a number, because we measured a year of foot traffic at 12,499 gyms and studios across 66 national chains, and ranked every one of them against every other location in its own chain.

Further down this page you can put in your ZIP code and see the five busiest measured gyms within fifteen miles of you and the five quietest within five, side by side, with the format of each one labeled. First, though, the national picture, because the busiest gym in the country is not run by the chain you would guess.

The National Picture in Four Numbers

12,499gyms and studios measured across 66 chains
2.20Bvisits to them in a year
79%of U.S. ZIP codes have one within fifteen miles
4,712visits a day at the busiest gym in America

Planet Fitness dominates on scale: 2,427 clubs drawing about 840 million visits a year, which is 38% of every visit we measure and four times the next-biggest chain. Anytime Fitness has nearly as many locations, 2,036, and runs far quieter ones, because a small-box gym open around the clock is a different product from a big-box gym with a pool. Orangetheory’s 995 studios sell scheduled classes, so their traffic is a fraction of a full-size gym’s by design rather than by failure.

The 10 Busiest Gyms in America

These are the ten highest-traffic clubs anywhere in our panel, and the answer is a chain most of the country has never heard of. EoS Fitness, a 141-club operator concentrated in the Sun Belt, holds seven of the ten. 24 Hour Fitness takes the other three. Planet Fitness, which runs more clubs than anyone, does not place a single location.

1
24 Hour Fitness, San Diego, CA — 1,719,772 visits a yearThe busiest gym in America sits on Balboa Avenue in San Diego, and it is not one of the chains most people would name. That is about 4,712 visits a day.
2
EoS Fitness, Sugar Land, TX — 1,503,400 visits a yearA Houston suburb most of the country has never heard of holds the second-busiest gym in the United States. That is about 4,119 visits a day.
3
24 Hour Fitness, Irvine, CA — 1,502,306 visits a yearOrange County’s second entry, and the third gym in the country to clear 1.5 million visits in a year. That is about 4,116 visits a day.
4
EoS Fitness, Jurupa Valley, CA — 1,377,130 visits a yearInland Riverside County, not coastal Los Angeles. The Inland Empire turns up three times in this top ten. That is about 3,773 visits a day.
5
EoS Fitness, Boca Raton, FL — 1,373,762 visits a yearSouth Florida’s busiest gym, on State Road 7 west of Boca Raton. That is about 3,764 visits a day.
6
EoS Fitness, Moreno Valley, CA — 1,366,342 visits a yearMoreno Valley is a city of about 200,000 and its EoS runs at nearly 3,750 visits a day. That is about 3,743 visits a day.
7
EoS Fitness, Boynton Beach, FL — 1,354,838 visits a yearThe second Palm Beach County club on the list, twenty-five miles up the coast from the first. That is about 3,712 visits a day.
8
EoS Fitness, Frisco, TX — 1,333,490 visits a yearNorth of Dallas in Frisco, one of the fastest-growing suburbs in America. That is about 3,653 visits a day.
9
EoS Fitness, Tempe, AZ — 1,331,440 visits a yearThe Phoenix metro’s entry, in Tempe, a mile from Arizona State. That is about 3,648 visits a day.
10
24 Hour Fitness, Torrance, CA — 1,305,248 visits a yearThe tenth-busiest gym in the country, in the South Bay. Every club on this list is in California, Texas, Florida or Arizona. That is about 3,576 visits a day.

Why You Have Probably Never Heard of the Busiest Chain in America

EoS Fitness runs 141 clubs. Planet Fitness runs 2,427. EoS is barely a tenth the size, and it still owns the top of that list, because its clubs are enormous, cheap and concentrated in exactly the places that have been growing fastest: Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida and inland California.

The per-club gap is the part worth sitting with. A typical EoS sees about 2,200 visits a day. A typical Planet Fitness sees 907. One chain has seventeen times the footprint and less than half the traffic per door, which is a good reminder that the sign over the entrance tells you very little about what the floor feels like at six o’clock.

How Busy Are the Gyms Near You?

That is the national answer. Here is yours. Put in your ZIP code and you will get the five busiest measured gyms within fifteen miles and the five quietest within five miles, close enough to actually use, with the format of each one labeled, because a booked-class studio and a big-box gym are not the same product.

How Crowded Is Your Chain, Ranked

This is the part that applies to everyone, whichever gym you belong to. The figure is the typical location of that chain in visits per day, and the range across the whole list is enormous: a typical EoS Fitness handles about a hundred times the daily traffic of a typical StretchLab. That gap is mostly format, not brand, so the chains are grouped by what kind of room they actually are.

Each figure is the median location of that chain, annualized and divided by 365. Bars are scaled within each group, because a class studio and a full-size gym are not competing for the same floor. Chains with fewer than 20 measured locations are excluded.

Your Own Chain Has Quiet Clubs and Packed Ones

Averages hide the thing you actually care about, which is whether your branch is one of the bad ones. Within a single chain the spread runs roughly three to four times from a quiet location to a busy one. Here is that range for the six largest full-size chains, with the tenth percentile as the quiet end and the ninetieth as the busy end.

Crunch Fitness — a quiet club runs 557 a day, a typical one 1,235, a busy one 2,077Crunch runs the busiest typical club of the six big-box options here, and a quarter of its clubs clear 829 visits a day. Its busiest location is in Palm Harbor, FL, at 3,015 a day.
LA Fitness — a quiet club runs 492 a day, a typical one 972, a busy one 1,646A quiet LA Fitness is still busier than a typical Gold’s Gym. The floor under this chain is high. Its busiest location is in Irvine, CA, at 3,230 a day.
Planet Fitness — a quiet club runs 517 a day, a typical one 907, a busy one 1,421Even a quiet Planet Fitness sees more than 500 people a day. There is no such thing as an empty one. Its busiest location is in Allentown, PA, at 2,969 a day.
Gold’s Gym — a quiet club runs 301 a day, a typical one 578, a busy one 1,006The smallest footprint of the six, at 160 clubs, and the only one of them most Americans cannot reach. Its busiest location is in Crofton, MD, at 1,980 a day.
Orangetheory Fitness — a quiet club runs 55 a day, a typical one 139, a busy one 253Class capacity caps the top end, but the spread is the widest of the six: a busy studio runs nearly five times a quiet one. Its busiest location is in Stamford, CT, at 658 a day.
Anytime Fitness — a quiet club runs 61 a day, a typical one 125, a busy one 245A quarter of Anytime clubs see under 90 people a day, spread across 24 hours. That is under four an hour. Its busiest location is in La Cañada Flintridge, CA, at 674 a day.

If You Hate a Crowded Gym, Read This Part

Pick the chain before you pick the club. The format decides the crowd more than the location does. A typical Club Pilates sees 65 people a day and a typical Crunch sees 1,235. No amount of choosing the right branch closes a gap that size.
A booked class is a guaranteed spot.Orangetheory, F45, CycleBar and solidcore all cap attendance by design. You may not get your preferred time, but you will never circle the floor waiting for a rack.
Small-box 24-hour gyms are the quiet big-gym option.Anytime Fitness and Snap Fitness run about 125 and 101 visits a day. Spread over 24 hours, that is roughly five people an hour. The trade is less equipment.
A quiet branded gym still is not quiet. The 10% least-visited Planet Fitness locations still see more than 500 people a day. If your goal is an empty floor, the chain matters more than the branch.
Check what is actually near you before assuming.Across all 66 chains, only 51% of American ZIP codes have one within five miles, though 79% have one within fifteen. Planet Fitness alone reaches 37%; Gold’s Gym just 3%.
Volume is not the same as busy at your hour.Every figure here is a yearly total. A club with 3,000 visits a day may be dead at 2pm and impossible at 6pm, and our data cannot yet separate the two.

Look Up One Chain Against the Whole Country

The tool at the top ranks whatever sits near you, across all 66 chains. This one does the opposite for six of the biggest: pick a chain, and it tells you exactly where your branch falls among every location that chain operates, plus the clubs immediately above and below yours in the national standings.

About This Data

Visit figures come from our proprietary location-intelligence dataset covering measured foot traffic at 12,499 U.S. gym and studio locations across 66 national chains, annualized from a November 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026 measurement window. Counts are visits rather than unique members, so one person going four times a week appears four times a week. Daily figures divide the annual total by 365; many Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness locations are open 24 hours, so a daily number spreads across a longer day at those chains than at a studio selling scheduled classes. Fewer than one percent of locations returned implausibly low counts, generally clubs that opened or closed inside the measurement window, and those are excluded from the quiet-end figures. Coverage is calculated against 18,329 ZIP code centroids, straight-line from the centroid. Some chains are measured at only a minority of their locations, so a nearby club can be missing. Washington State is absent from this measurement panel, so clubs there do not appear in the tool.
