Fitness Four publishes information about exercise, food, sleep, and healthy aging for adults, especially women in midlife and beyond. This page explains what that information is, what it is not, and how to use it safely.
Not a substitute for medical care
Everything on Fitness Four is general information for education. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a doctor or other qualified health professional who knows your history. Reading the site, commenting, or emailing us does not create a doctor-patient or other professional relationship.
Never ignore professional medical advice, or delay seeking it, because of something you read here.
In an emergency
If you think you may be having a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number right away. Do not use this website or our email address to seek help in an emergency.
Check with your doctor before you change your routine
Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, changing how you eat, or taking a supplement. That matters most if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or another ongoing condition
- Have osteoporosis or low bone density, or have had a fracture
- Have had a joint replacement, a recent surgery, or an injury
- Have balance problems, dizziness, or a history of falls
- Take prescription medication
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Stop any exercise that causes pain, chest discomfort, shortness of breath beyond what you expect, dizziness, or faintness, and get medical advice.
Supplements and medications
Supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications, and some are not appropriate for people with certain conditions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start one. Statements about dietary supplements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
How our health content is reviewed
Our articles are written by named writers, and each writer’s background is on their author page. Some articles are also reviewed by a licensed clinician, and when that has happened, the reviewer’s name appears at the top of the article. A medical review checks the article for accuracy at the time of review. It does not make the article personal advice for you.
Health research changes, and a study we describe may later be updated or contradicted. We work to keep articles current, but we cannot promise that everything reflects the latest evidence on the day you read it.
Personal stories
Some articles and pages, including our founder’s story on the About page, describe one person’s own experience with a health condition, food, or exercise. Personal experience can be useful and encouraging, but what worked for one person may not be right for you.
The Find Your Four planner
Find Your Four is a general activity planner, not a treatment program. It does not know your medical history. If you have a condition, an injury, or restrictions on activity, ask a qualified clinician which activities are appropriate for you before following a plan.
